Fireworks Safety

July 2nd, 2014 by Melanie Ledbetter-Remy

Fireworks in Houston and across the United States tend to be the highlight of the Fourth of July holiday. Unfortunately, people who are not experienced in operating fireworks contribute to thousands of accidents during the holiday. Outdoor, house and car fires are all reported in relation to the improper use of fireworks. Deaths and injuries also occur each year because of improper fireworks operation. Over $30 million in damage is done by fireworks each Fourth of July.

Houston fireworks display companies are able to provide the beauty of fireworks without exposing event planners to the risk associated with operating them. Professionals have the experience needed to coordinate a breathtaking fireworks show while prioritizing safety. Even sparklers and other small fireworks used to celebrate Independence Day can cause fires or injuries, so it is important for people to be proactive about staying safe this holiday.

Tips For Staying Safe Around Fireworks

The best way to stay safe while enjoying fireworks this holiday is by leaving the display to the professionals. Research local events that end with a fireworks display for a safe solution.

While public events that include a fireworks display are much safer than trying to operate fireworks without the necessary experience, it is still possible for people to become injured at these events. Children may become injured if they wander into the area in which the display is set up. Parents and relatives should discuss the dangers of fireworks with their children before attending an event. Diligent supervision can help to reduce the risk of injury.

Fireworks that appear to be inactive may still be lit. It is important for people to avoid handling debris from fireworks after a display has ended. Do not allow children to pick up this debris after the show.

Pet injuries can also occur during fireworks displays. Pets are more difficult to control when fireworks are being set off, so it is recommended that furry family members stay at home during these events.

Safe Operation of Handheld Fireworks

Approximately 16 percent of all fireworks-related injuries that occur each year can be linked to sparklers. Many people believe that sparklers are safe because of their small size and widespread availability, but the fact that one end is kept lit while they are in use means that sparklers do pose a risk to people who do not handle them properly.

Sparklers can reach an impressive 1,200 degrees. The high heat at the lit end of a sparkler is able to cause third-degree burns, and people who are only exposed to the heat for a few seconds can experience these serious burns.

Sparklers should be immediately placed in a bucket of water when they are done being used. This helps to prevent children from accidentally touching the hot metal. Prepare a water source before lighting sparklers.

Children should never be allowed to light sparklers on their own. Small children should not be given sparklers at all. If parents would like smaller children to participate when sparklers are being used, older children or adults can display sparklers from a safe distance.

Leaving the Big Displays To Professionals

Firefighters are used to responding to calls related to the improper use of fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday. These emergency responders recommend that only licensed fireworks exhibitors handle the dangerous products for the safety of children, adults and pets.

A company that specializes in convention services can handle fireworks displays for these events. Businesses in Houston that offer party rentals often employ experienced individuals who can properly handle fireworks. Anyone who would like to include fireworks during a special event can consult with a professional fireworks operator to help make any festivity memorable for all the right reasons.

The History of Fireworks

June 19th, 2014 by Melanie Ledbetter-Remy

Many people who head to the Houston fireworks show every July 4 know that those splashes of color on the nighttime sky have symbolized this American holiday for as long as they can remember. However, you may not realize just how old the tradition of fireworks displays really is.

On July 4, 1777, exactly one year after the United States declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, fireworks displays took place in Boston and then-capital Philadelphia to celebrate the holiday. This was even though the Revolutionary War would not end for another six years. However, that was exactly why these celebrations were necessary, to help create a sense of patriotism so early in the country’s history.

Other early Independence Day fireworks displays took place in 1779 in Worcester, Mass., and in 1783 in Charleston, S.C. Also in 1783, fireworks were placed on public sale for the first time in Philadelphia.

However, the history of fireworks actually dates about 2,000 years to the Han dynasty in China. It is believed that they originated when green bamboo was thrown into a fire, and it exploded, much to the surprise of those who witnessed this discovery. However, much like lovers of horror movies today, they started enjoying the tension that was created from the anticipation of these loud bangs.

The Chinese soon utilized this scare tactic to chase away spirits, such as Nian, who likes to come out of hiding to attack people and crops. These early fireworks shows were also used to commemorate special occasions like births and coronations.

Shortly after gun powder was invented, it was added to the bamboo to create more spectacular explosions than the blasts that were caused solely from the expansion of air and sap.

One of the first people to bring fireworks from China into Europe was Marco Polo, who did so in 1292, and the Italians were the first to really advance the artistic aspect of fireworks as they modified rockets with charcoal and metals to light up the sky. The Italians were also able to create fireworks that exploded once the deployed canisters were at their maximum altitude. Soon, these controlled blasts were being used in places throughout Europe for celebrations like festivals and weddings.

However, fireworks did not really become popular in Europe until the latter half of the 1700s, around the time that they started being regularly used in the United States. Pierre Nicolas le Cheron d’Incrville, a Jesuit missionary from France who was living in China at the time, sent information about how fireworks were made to the Paris Academy of Sciences. Once his work was translated in 1765, the number of people in Europe who became interested in them and how they worked increased dramatically.

Italy would later become responsible for how colorful fireworks are today. Prior to the early 1800s, their colors were generally limited to orange and white. However, the Italians utilized chemical advancements to create explosions that were also blue, green, red and yellow. In addition, they discovered a way to create explosions that were brighter and deeper. Today, fireworks shows can even include colors such as aqua, pink and salmon.

This history is continuing to be written in modern days. In fact, the world record for the largest fireworks show was set on Dec. 31, 2013, when more than 500,000 of them were lit along a 58-mile span in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to commemorate New Year’s Eve. The previous record was 77,000; this mark was shattered within the first minute of the six-minute show.

It is clear that fireworks can help make any event special, and many of those who desire a show for their own Houston celebration utilize party rentals and convention services companies. In fact, many have decided to enjoy indoor fireworks shows as these have become increasingly popular and can be safely provided by the same party rentals and convention services businesses.

Fireworks Displays Can Make Any Event Memorable

March 15th, 2013 by laureng

For many people, the most memorable part of a Fourth of July celebration is the spectacular fireworks displays that light up the evening sky with brilliant colors. The whistling of the bottle rockets is the anticipatory signal that something visually spectacular is about to happen and all eyes are raised to see what phenomenal display of pyrotechnics ensues.

Today, exciting pyrotechnics are no longer reserved for national holidays. Critical advances in pyrotechnology allow highly-trained, artistic and creative professionals to design pyrotechnic displays that are small enough to enchant wedding guests and large enough to bring an entire stadium of sports fans to their feet with a roar. Without a doubt, modern pyrotechnics is a new art form requiring an entirely unique type of artist.

Using everything from fog, bubble and confetti machines to lighting systems that rival the Aurora Borealis, these talented artists’ sole goal is to provide an unforgettable visual and aural experience augmented by pyrotechnic glory. In most cases, the result is almost beyond the average person’s imagination.

Surprisingly, weddings have become a popular venue for pyrotechnic displays. In a reception hall with subdued lighting, tabletop sparklers reflecting off the dinnerware and silverware are almost ethereal. With the perimeter of the dance floor graced with strategically placed sparklers, the effect is mesmerizing, elegant and unforgettable.

If a bit more flash is to a client’s taste, a skilled pyrotechnic artist can create eye-popping effects like combinations of fireworks and flame effects enhanced with sound and music – all choreographed and timed to the second to engage as many of the human senses as possible. It can be an unbelievable and visceral experience.

For musical or theatrical stage performances, the quality of the special effects has an enormous influence on the audience’s final perception of the show. Again, timing is essential, but so is the proper selection of pyrotechnics and other effects. As exciting as a huge and sparkling roman candle can be during a rock concert, too much of that exciting visual will detract from the musicians’ performances. Real pros know the value of restraint.

Outdoor events give a good pyrotechnic professional the entire sky to use as a canvas as well as the tents or other structures that are part of the overall experience. Outdoor aerials are always a favorite with guests and the more inventive, the better. For corporate events, a pyrotechnic logo or monogram is an exciting event closer that will firmly anchor the entire event and its message in the minds of the attendees.

All of this talent, creativity and pyrotechnical expertise are found at premier event production companies that feature pyrotechnics and traditional fireworks among their event production services. Since pyrotechnics obviously has an emphasis on the “pyro”, most pyrotechnic services require state licensing, which includes specific training and testing for a Pyrotechnic Operator. Training involves direct experience working with a licensed professional for a specified amount of time.

Convention services companies offering pyrotechnics and flame effects will have licensed operators, excellent general liability insurance and can demonstrate a stellar safety record. The safety record is a very important facet of any company offering pyrotechnic services. A pyrotechnic display at an event will be the wrong kind of “memorable” if the main feature is an explosion and a fire.

As dramatic as pyrotechnic displays are, a premier event production company will also offer more well-known event services such as audio visual equipment rental, large screen monitors, state-of-the-art sound systems and event design consultation.

Pyrotechnic displays can be the stuff of imaginations, and with modern technology these displays are likely to become more common at all types of events.
